Even with access to blockbuster obesity drugs, some individuals find themselves struggling to lose weight despite their best efforts. For example, Danielle Griffin, a 38-year-old IT worker from New Mexico, had no trouble obtaining drugs like Wegovy, which are designed to promote weight loss. Despite medical coverage and a strong commitment to diet and exercise, Griffin only lost 13 pounds over 18 months on Wegovy. She is among the 10%-15% of patients who are considered “nonresponders,” meaning they do not achieve the expected weight loss results.

Clinical trials indicate that drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can lead to an average weight loss of 15-22% of body weight; however, a significant portion of patients may not respond as well, with some losing less than 5% of their body weight. Recent expert opinions suggest that as many as 20% of people may not achieve desired results from these medications. The variability in response can be attributed to individual genetics, hormonal levels, and other health conditions that may interfere with weight loss.

Despite high expectations, many users of these medications experience disappointment when weight loss is minimal. According to Dr. Fatima Cody Stanford, an obesity specialist, it’s crucial for patients to understand that weight loss responses are individualized, and different factors affect the outcome.

Moreover, the emotional toll of not seeing expected results can lead to frustration and feelings of failure. Griffin’s journey illustrates this emotional roller coaster clearly, as she had hoped to lose much more weight but instead found herself grappling with minimal progress.

Interestingly, weight loss outcomes can often be evident within weeks of starting the drug, and some patients experience side effects such as nausea and vomiting, causing them to discontinue treatment. Health professionals emphasize that even if new medications do not work as planned, patients still have options. Alternatives exist, including trying different drugs or focusing on lifestyle changes such as diet, exercise, and stress management.

Dr. Jody Dushay notes the importance of pursuing a comprehensive approach to obesity treatment, acknowledging the complexity of obesity as a disease that requires varied strategies tailored to the individual’s needs.
