People taking part in the dieting scheme have reported significant weight loss, with one in three reversing their diabetes. The NHS Soup and Shake diet, endorsed by health expert Dr. Michael Mosley, allows participants to replace regular meals with a selection of shakes and soups, consuming only 800 calories a day.
This initiative is part of the NHS Type 2 Diabetes Path to Remission programme, which has yielded transformative results. In a recent study published in the Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, participants on the soup and shake diet experienced an average weight loss of 16kg, approximately two and a half stones. Remarkably, 32% of those who completed the programme were able to reverse their type 2 diabetes.
Over the course of the programme, participants receive continuous support and monitoring for 12 months to help them reintroduce regular foods after the initial phase. This comprehensive approach ensures they have guidance throughout their weight loss journey.
The study involved 7,540 participants referred to the programme between September 2020 and December 2022. Among those who commenced the soup and shake diet, 945 successfully completed the year-long training.
Dr. Mosley highlighted the effectiveness of the diet, noting that it provides around 800-900 calories and incorporates sufficient protein and nutrients. He cautioned, however, that individuals should consult their healthcare providers before starting a stringent weight-loss routine.
Eligibility for the NHS Soup and Shake diet includes being aged between 18 and 65 years, having been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes within the last six years, and having a BMI over 27 (if from White ethnic groups) or over 25 (for Black, Asian, or other ethnic groups).
Interested individuals should discuss their situation with their GP or diabetes team to determine if they qualify for the programme. Those who don’t meet the criteria might explore alternatives, such as the NHS Digital Weight Management Programme, a 12-week online lifestyle program.
