A mother of four, Laura Johnson, has transformed her life after a decade of battling with weight through numerous fad diets. Hailing from Doncaster, South Yorkshire, Laura tried over 10 extreme weight loss plans including Slimming World, SlimFast, Weight Watchers, juicing, and calorie counting, but none brought the success she hoped for.

At her heaviest, Laura weighed 16 stone and wore a size 20 dress. The turning point came when she realized her weight was holding her back from truly enjoying life. “I didn’t want to leave the house. I felt so big and knew that wasn’t me,” she shared. In January 2022, encouraged by a friend’s success with weight loss surgery, she decided to undergo gastric sleeve surgery, which cost £10,000. Following her surgery, Laura lost five stone mainly through incorporating hula hooping into her routine.

“I’m obsessed with my weighted hula hoop,” Laura explained. Starting out with 15 minutes a day, she quickly fell in love with the fun, engaging exercise. In addition to hula hooping, she also began walking more and running using the ‘Couch to 5K’ app.

The surgery, which removed 80% of her stomach, has allowed Laura to feel full quickly and has dramatically changed her relationship with food. “I still indulge occasionally, but I don’t binge anymore. Life is much more enjoyable now,” she said, reflecting on her newfound enthusiasm for activities with her children and regaining the lighter mental load that comes with her weight loss. Laura now weighs 11 stone and wears a size 10 dress, a visible testament to her incredible journey to health and happiness.
