Dylan Simkin, 49, had been overweight since his 20s and had a liver transplant in 2021. Before the surgery, Dylan weighed 18st 6½lb (117kg), and after his incredible journey, he now weighs 12st 5lb (79kg), achieving a remarkable weight loss of 6st 1½lb (38kg).
Coming to terms with his diagnosis of liver disease was a challenge. Although the condition was not directly caused by his weight, heavy drinking contributed significantly to his health issues. After years of prioritizing enjoyment over health, Dylan faced the consequences and became severely ill by December 2019, leading him to undergo a life-changing liver transplant.
The recovery process was difficult, especially as Dylan battled with weight gain post-surgery. To cope, he often turned to sweets and snacks, feeling sluggish even during recovery. As he approached his return to work, he realized something had to change.
Initially, Dylan attempted to lose weight on his own by cutting back on snacks and takeaways; shedding about a stone. However, after reaching a plateau, he sought additional support. He turned to Slimming World after discovering how many men were participating, which dispelled his misconceptions about weight-loss groups being predominantly for women.
Joining the group provided Dylan with not just a structured eating plan, but invaluable support from fellow members. He found joy in cooking meals and sharing healthy recipes with his partner, Michelle, who also joined him on this journey, losing weight of her own.
As the pounds started to drop off, Dylan noticed a transformation in his physical capabilities. Tasks that once left him breathless became manageable, allowing him to embrace a more active lifestyle.
Dylan reflects on how this weight loss journey taught him the importance of caring for his body. The dark day of needing a liver transplant paved the way for a healthier and brighter future. Now, he eagerly anticipates the next chapter of his life, equipped with newfound energy and vitality.
