Comedian and actor Jim Gaffigan recently shared his inspiring weight loss journey during his November 2024 Netflix stand-up special, The Skinny. Gaffigan, known for his relatable humor and comedic talent, has successfully shed 50 pounds, a achievement he humorously attributed to the type 2 diabetes medication, Mounjaro.

At his heaviest, Gaffigan weighed 270 pounds. He explained to People magazine, “I feel good. I’m just grateful because it’s such a better life.” His weight fluctuated over the years, and he came to a point where he needed to take charge of his health. The decision to use Mounjaro came after years of battling with his weight and experiencing increasing health issues.

In the past, Gaffigan shared that in his 20s, he often worked out twice a day just to enjoy his favorite foods. However, as he aged, changes in his metabolism, along with health problems like knee pain and fatigue, made it significantly harder to maintain his previous weight. During this comedic special, he shared his thoughts on society’s reluctance to openly discuss weight loss medications, stating, “I almost thought it was kind of odd that people were resistant to talking about it. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it … it’s just whatever gets you through.”

Gaffigan’s weight loss journey isn’t solely due to medication. Alongside Mounjaro, he adopted a low-carb diet and even began growing his own vegetables. He noted, “Growing vegetables makes you more interested in consuming those vegetables, which makes you healthier, which makes you kind of look at what you’re consuming, which makes fast food look like the crap that it is.” This newfound interest in healthy eating complements his medication, leading to a more fulfilling lifestyle.

As he embraces this new chapter, he also humorously acknowledged the difficulties that come with maintaining weight loss in the long run, jokingly stating in his special, “I’m trying to enjoy being thin because I know I’m going to be fat again. This is not sustainable.”
