A dad kicked his £6,000-a-year takeaway addiction to lose six stone after his wife “nagged” him to make a change. Bill Chana, 56, weighed 19st 7lbs and wore a size XXXL when he was at his heaviest. The dad of one ate out or got a takeaway 90 percent of the time, gorging on McDonald’s breakfasts and chippy teas.
After struggling to complete daily chores such as grocery shopping without getting out of breath, and being diagnosed with type two diabetes, asthma, and high cholesterol, Bill decided to make a change. His wife, Sita, had been trying to convince him to join Slimming World for months, and he finally decided to go along with her.
In just eight months, Bill reached 12st 13lbs and a size L, now enjoying home-cooked meals and regularly hitting the gym. Bill explained, “On average, I was spending £6,000 a year on takeaways including dining out and drinking beers, spirits, and wines. It used to be 10% cooking in the house and 90% eating out, but now it’s 100% in the house.”
Initially, Bill thought Slimming World was more for women and wasn’t sure it was the right fit for him. However, he recalls, “The first few months were astonishing. At my first weigh-in, I lost eight pounds and was shocked to see that it was actually working. Before I knew it, in just 38 days, I had lost a stone, and that is when adrenaline kicked in. I knew I wanted to do this 100%.”
Bill made significant changes to his lifestyle, including ditching unhealthy food habits for fresh meals like chicken curry and starting to go to the gym twice a week. He shares, “By losing this weight, I was very shocked that I didn’t need any medication, and I was moved into remission. Because of the diet, I no longer had a fatty liver. My alcohol intake is minimal now, but I treat myself every now and then.”
Now feeling amazing in his new size (Waist 36, Chest 42), he noted that his family says he looks unrecognizable. He joked, “My annual boiler engineer thought he had the wrong house!”
