If you’re struggling to lose weight, a medical expert has shared a 36-hour fasting technique believed to help shed belly fat quickly and effectively. This fasting method, introduced by Dr. Mindy Pelz, a nutrition and functional medicine specialist, involves an intense approach: fasting for 36 hours followed by a 12-hour eating period.

Dr. Pelz enthusiastically discussed this regimen on the Diary Of A CEO podcast with host Steven Bartlett, stating, “So the fat burner fast is probably my favourite for those people who want to lose weight.” She explained the biological process, noting that at the 36-hour mark, blood sugars drop significantly, prompting the body to enter essentially survival mode and begin utilizing stored fat as energy.

According to Dr. Pelz, this fasting method initiates a process called autophagy—where the body begins to clean out damaged cells, reduce inflammation, and produce ketones, which improve fat oxidation. She emphasized that this 36-hour fast specifically targets belly fat, which is often a primary concern for many people looking to lose weight.

During her discussion, Dr. Pelz referenced research that supports her approach, mentioning that those following this fasting schedule for a month have seen specific improvements in waist size. “It’s really up to you how often you do it; some of my academy members have seen waist size reductions by doing it weekly, while others choose to fast monthly or yearly, depending on personal preference,” she said.

However, Dr. Pelz advises that individuals should be sensible with this method. While it can be highly effective, it may not be suitable for everyone. She pointed out groups that should consult a healthcare provider before attempting this fasting regimen, including those with active jobs, pregnant or nursing women, individuals with a history of eating disorders, and those with pre-existing medical conditions.

During the fasting phase, no calories are to be consumed; however, zero-calorie beverages like flavored water, coffee, and tea are allowed. Dr. Pelz highlighted the potential advantages of this approach beyond weight loss, including improved longevity, heart health, and better cognitive function.

As this fasting method gains attention, many are left wondering if this intense approach is right for them. As always, consult with your GP if you have any concerns about starting a new dietary regimen.
