As the year 2025 unfolds, many individuals in the Detroit Lakes area are contemplating how to make their New Year’s resolutions a reality, particularly around losing weight and getting fit. A great local resource for such support is the Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) Club, Minnesota chapter 910, which celebrated its remarkable 50-year anniversary in December 2024.
TOPS MN 910 provides a warm, welcoming environment for anyone looking to lose weight. Carol Huesman, chapter leader, expressed the group’s enthusiasm for reaching this milestone: “Our chapter is thrilled to celebrate this milestone, and we look forward to celebrating many more anniversaries to come. We’re committed to losing weight together, and our core mission remains constant: to educate the public on weight imbalance and its underlying causes. Anyone who’s looking for weight-loss support is welcome as a TOPS member.”
The chapter was chartered on March 21, 1974, and recognized for its 50-year milestone by TOPS Club, Inc. President Rick Danforth. Nationally, TOPS Club has a long-standing history, having been around for 75 years. It is unique as the only nonprofit, noncommercial weight-loss organization, with thousands of chapters across the U.S. and Canada.
Members of the Detroit Lakes chapter meet every Thursday at 9 a.m. in Trinity Lutheran Church at 1401 Madison Ave. During these sessions, they engage in discussions about nutrition, portion control, meal planning, exercise, and more. The supportive group environment, health education, and recognition significantly contribute to successful weight management.

TOPS began in 1948 when Esther Manz started a small group with friends to support each other in achieving weight loss. The movement grew quickly, expanding from a kitchen table gathering to thousands of members across the Midwest. It became incorporated in 1952 and has since evolved into an international program.
If you’re looking for a supportive community to help you adhere to your weight loss goals in 2025, consider joining the TOPS Club where members work together towards healthier lifestyles.
