Jim Gaffigan’s style of stand-up comedy has always been rooted in observational and self-deprecating humor. For years, he made fun of his own physical appearance, including his weight. Recently, Gaffigan lost 50 pounds after starting Mounjaro, a medication for weight loss. Instead of steering clear of the topic, he cleverly turned his experiences into material for his new stand-up special, “The Skinny,” which is available on Hulu.

In his set, Gaffigan uses self-deprecating humor to talk about his weight loss journey, joking about the clothes he still has from when he was heavier. He humorously explains that he’s reluctant to let go of his “fat clothes” because he fears he might need them again. He humorously states, “I’m trying to enjoy being thin because I know I’m going to be fat again. This is not sustainable.”

In an interview with Men’s Health, Gaffigan discussed his newfound weight loss and the relationship he has with his old wardrobe, which reflects a common struggle many face when trying to maintain changes in their body. “Maybe I’m a pack rat, but I’m like, ‘I can’t get rid of that.’ And then there is something about the haunting,” he shared, embracing the hidden worries of gaining weight back.

Gaffigan, 58, has gone down two pant sizes and reflected on how losing weight hasn’t lessened his humorous take on body image. “People used to always say, ‘If you lost weight, you’d lose your whole act,’” he explained. “But also in some ways, that may be the avenue of our warmth.”

The comedian slimmed down using Mounjaro, which suppresses appetite and aids in better sugar and fat breakdown within the body. He emphasized that societal pressure usually oversimplifies weight control, as in, “Just control your appetite. Just stop being a f***ing pig.” However, Gaffigan believes medications like Mounjaro help counteract compulsive eating tendencies, giving a sense of balance.

In addition to Mounjaro, Gaffigan adopted a low-carb diet and started growing his own vegetables, which he’s found has helped him take more interest in healthy eating. He remarks, “Growing vegetables makes you more interested in consuming those vegetables, which makes you healthier…”

Earlier this month, he shared in another interview that he isn’t focused on losing more weight and is undecided on how long he will keep taking Mounjaro. He enjoys remaining active by walking around New York City, where he lives with his wife, Jeannie, and their five children.

While many may not appreciate the humor, Gaffigan’s candid approach about his weight loss journey is relatable. Many share similar experiences with weight fluctuations and the challenge of letting go of old clothes for “just in case” situations. A note to anyone struggling with their body image: do not let worries define you, as it is crucial to embrace the body you have today, just as Gaffigan has learned to do.
