Chrissy Metz has been open about her journey with weight loss over the years, capturing the hearts of many as she portrayed Kate Pearson on “This Is Us,” who faced her own weight-loss challenges throughout the series. Metz shared that the character resonated with viewers, explaining that, “What I will miss most about Kate is that I think so many people… relate to her and her walking imperfectly through her trials and tribulations and all the shame and guilt that she’s carried for so long.” Although the show wrapped in 2022, the conversation surrounding body image continues.

Growing up, Metz described herself as a “chubby kid” and has candidly discussed her lifelong struggles with weight. “I was definitely always a chubbier kid,” Metz said in an interview, reflecting on how she had to be conscious of her eating habits from a young age. Food, which her family used to express love, sometimes complicated her relationship with it, leading to challenges during her weight loss journey.

In her memoir, “This Is Me: Loving the Person You Are Today,” Metz revisits painful memories, including traumatic weigh-ins initiated by her stepfather, who she refers to as “Trigger.” At 14, she found herself on the receiving end of harsh comments regarding her weight, which profoundly impacted her self-esteem.

As she pursued her acting career, Metz initially lost 50 pounds but later faced significant weight gain during tough times in Hollywood. A transformative hospital visit following a panic attack marked a turning point for her. Post-hospitalization, Metz lost 100 pounds in less than five months, primarily by adhering to a 2,000-calorie diet and walking 20 minutes daily.

Despite her weight loss, Metz emphasizes that her journey is personal, stating, “I don’t worry about numbers” because focusing on them can be overwhelming. Instead, she advocates for a healthy relationship with food and oneself, encouraging others to understand that worthiness isn’t tied to weight. “If you don’t love yourself for who you are right now, you’re never going to get to the place you want to be,” she advised.

Her character Kate Pearson’s story on “This Is Us” allowed Metz to reflect on her own experiences. She noted, “It’s one thing to try to do it on your own, but as human beings, it’s an ego thing: We’re more likely to do something for someone else.” This sentiment reinforced her belief in prioritizing mental health and self-acceptance throughout wellness journeys.

Metz’s journey is a strong reminder that health comes in various forms and looks different for everyone, regardless of numbers on a scale. By sharing her story, she hopes to inspire others to embrace their bodies and evolve their definitions of health.
